Hot Sauce, Chile Peppers, Absolutely Everything About Hot Chiles
Quite the entertaining "cult Japanese cooking show." It's quite a lot like "Galloping Gourmet meets WWF Wrestling."
For each episode, a visiting chef picks one of the "Iron Chefs" with which to compete in the Kitchen Stadium. An ingredient is chosen as the ingredient for the show, and they are given something like half an hour to prepare a full menu of dishes all of which feature the chosen ingredient. For instance, in the "Asparagus Battle," all the dishes, including the desert, prominently featured asparagus.
At the end, a panel of judges (apparently Japanese celebrities) score the dishes, dubbed into peculiar English, and, almost always, the Iron Chef beats out the contender.
Many of the dishes wind up being very Japanese, and thus pretty bizarre to Western palates. For instance, the combination of rock salt, green tea, and asparagus wouldn't commonly occur to Western chefs, certainly not as a dessert item.
Others, on the other hand, seem fairly fabulous. They often pull in "special ingredients" that are ridiculously exclusive/expensive. Occasionally there's a neat idea to be had...
